10 Best iPhone and iPad Apps for Fashion Trends on the Go

If you are both a smart phone addict and a fashion addict, this post is for you. Last week when European Vogue announced their limited time only free app for the iPad I got to thinking: What are the best fashion apps out there?

Well, I sought them out, and here they are. Take a look at what's worth downloading and what you can get for free.

Chicfeed: This app pulls together photos from the web's top style and fashion blogs and puts them all in one place for your viewing pleasure. (free)

Dealspot: Dealspot lists local deals happening around you and is refreshed daily. Pretty much the best companion for any girl who loves to shop, and shop wisely. (free)

Target: Alright, most ladies I know can't help but avoid this retailer to fill out our wardrobe, and buy a few groceries and toiletries while we're at it. The Target app is meant to help streamline your store experience. It also shows what's on sale. (free)

The Sartorialist: This photo-heavy blog that loves to feature elegantly dressed French and New York women riding bicycles is pretty much instantly fashion-inspiring. If you love pretty fashion pictures, this is a must-have app. (free)

ShopStyle: This app pulls together stores and designer brands into one place, encompassing 300 retailers. Use the app to email items to yourself, find availability and see what's on sale. (free)

StyleCaster: If you wake up in the morning and can't decide what to where, this is the app for you. StyleCaster will search your local weather and put together stylized suggestions based on your environment. (free)

The New York Times: For many fashionistas the New York Times Style Section is a must, and now the entire glory of the Times is available in your palm. (free)

Chanel: The Chanel app features a store locator, a look at the latest collection, and a glimpse inside Coco's apartment.

Sales Buddy: Another great one for the fashion conscious shopper, sales buddy helps you keep track of how much you're spending when you're out and about. ($0.99)

Elle's Shopping Guide: Find out where you can buy your favorite fashion spreads featured in Elle magazine. (free)

Fashion News: JWoww, Lady Gaga, Lindsay Lohan and a Vogue iPad App

This was one crazy week in fashion news, so we decided to take a quick look back at the top fashion stories of the week. Fashion divas are making splashes on the runway, in Vegas, and in the courtroom.

JWoww Fashions Not so Wowerific: JWoww of Jersey Shore fame debuted her own fashion line this week in Vegas. Fittingly dubbed Filthy Couture, the line fully embraces the "guido" and "guidette" beach-going style of the show. JWoww commented on the bathing suits of the line while sporting a self-designed super lacy number in pink and black that looks like she snagged it from a Cyndi Lauper music video, "For bathing suits I wanted to go with a grungy, or sexy-grungy look with the chains, but I wanted to keep it girly with lace." Girls who like to dress filthy, rejoice? For more on celebrity fashion lines, check out my post from last week.

GooGoo for GaGa Eyes: Many are up in arms this week over the desire to emulate the googly eyes of Lady Gaga in her Bad Romance video. This has spawned an uptick in sales of circle contact lenses from Asia, which are illegal to purchase in the US without a prescription. The American Optometric Society warns the lenses could cause bacterial infection and significant damage to the eye--particularly if obtained without a prescription. The New York Times reported on several girls owning upwards of 20 pairs, and wearing them regularly.

Shortened Haute Couture Week in Paris: This week marks haute couture week in Paris, but this year, due to the financial crisis, it was shortened to just three days. And, as sales dwindle in cash-strapped Western markets, emerging markets have helped keep couture designers out of the red. Designers have adjusted colors and designs specifically to appeal to wealthy clientele in the emerging markets of Russia, China, and conservative Gulf States. With a couture dress running up to $100,000, it's no wonder the market for these exclusive dresses typically remains relegated to a couple hundred customers every year.

European Vogue Offers Free IPad App: European Vogue is the first European fashion magazine to reach out and offer an IPad app. The application is now free if you simply search for European Vogue in your iTunes store. Of course, the free part will be for a limited time only, so if you're a style buff, download now.

LiLo Puts on Courtroom Fashion Show: Well, what kind of fashion blogger would I be if I did not briefly comment on Lindsay Lohan's fashion showdown in court yesterday. Lohan changed outfits three times during her courtroom hearing, and also donned naughty nails with curse words scrawled on the finger nails of her middle digits. As easy as it is to love to hate Lohan, I have to say, she looked pretty darn good despite her unwanted sentence. She paired simple blacks and whites with smart blazers and pants. The nails, however, may have been an oversight. It will be interesting to see how her courtroom fashion show will affect her fashion line 6126 which was to be more heavily promoted by Lohan this month.

Britney Spears Kohls Clothing Line and Other Celebrity Fashion

This week marks the announcement of Britney Spears' new fashion line for Candies to debut in stores July 1. The pop princess describes the line as "edgy, yet girly." It will be available at Kohl's department stores, and most pieces seem to be hovering right around the $30 range. While we wish the pop princess the best, another celeb fashion line does beg the question, do consumers really care?

We examined some other well-known celeb lines to find out.

L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani: Gwen Stefani created the fashion line back in 2003, originally as a collaboration with LeSportsac. When it initially debuted at Nordstrom, the line sold out in three days and Nordstrom calls it the most successful launching of a line in the store's history. The label is again in a transitory state with no current website as Stefani focuses on designing shoes and her second label, Harajuku Lovers. The higher prices of Stefani's designer label have never seemed to deter her fans.

House of Dereon by Beyonce and Tina Knowles: Beyonce originally announced the launch of her designer line--which she runs in conjunction with her mother and sister--on Oprah. The pricey items are described as "where catwalk meets sidewalk." Beyonce and sister then later launched simply Dereon to give younger women more affordable options, albeit most items start around $60. The label took a lot of flack when they launched their line for young girls with photographs of seven year-olds in full make-up and heels. But the controversy did not hurt profits ,as their last reported quarterly earnings were at $79.5 million.

Elizabeth and James by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen: The twins definitely lead the pack as they've been in the fashion business almost since they were in diapers. Before they could run their own line, their fashions were all over Wal-Mart marketed at girls ages 4 to 11. When the girls finally did take over their company, they were praised for signing a contract to provide their employees with maternity leave at a factory in Bangladesh. The girls now head more adult labels like Elizabeth and James and most recently The Row. The designer items are all at designer prices, but the twins net worth is currently valued at over $100 million dollars--and we all know their acting hasn't garnished top-notch wages for about two decades.

Miley Cyrus and Max Azaria for Wal-Mart: Teen queen Miley currently holds the Wal-Mart fashion torch. She launched a line in conjunction with Max Azria last year at the discount giant. You have to hand it to Miley for creating an affordable line. All items are priced under $20. But watch out: the label hit a snag this Spring when jewelry sold under the Miley handle had unsafe levels of cadium, prompting a recall and much criticism as twelve year-olds are indeed still the market for Miley products.

Sean John by Sean Combs: P. Diddy is undoubtedly big pimping with his men's line--which now earns on average $100 million annually. In 2008 the label came under intense scrutiny for abusing sweatshop labor. Originally launched in 1998, the Sean John label does remain strong and can be found in department stores across the country.

Not to mention Phat Farm created by hip-hop founder Russell Simmons or its spin-off, Baby Phat, established by his ex-wife Kimora Lee Simmons or rapper Nelly's Apple Bottom line or the recently announced mother-daughter designed fashions of Madonna and Lourdes for Macy's.

Silly Bandz: Banned or Brilliant?

There is a very silly crazy dominating the wrists of both adults and kids everywhere this summer. The craze is called Silly Bandz and, not unlike snap bracelets or jelly bracelets, they've popped up all over the country thanks to word of mouth and no advertising. The bracelets have now adorned your local kindergartner and the wrists of fashion icon Sarah Jessica Parker--even though they are simply just glorified rubber bands.

The Silly Bandz are sold in brightly colored packs and come in the shapes of animals, cars, shoes, lips, and more. The suggested retail price per pack is $4.95, making them an attractive fad to cost-conscious parents.

The bracelets have become controversial in schools being banned at many at the end of this school year. Teachers called them a distraction. Kids have shown up in nurses offices with rashes, or wearing up to 40 bands on one wrist, causing circulation issues. Check out this Mom's commentary on the newly banned bands. When you consider some of the crazy video games our kids play, the bans do indeed seem a bit silly.

But, like the hula hoop, or the snap bracelet, for right now at least, it seems this trend cannot be stopped.. "Kids love to trade them, and they love the bright colors," says Florida teacher Angie Weber.

Silly Bandz parent company, BCP Imports, hasn't reported sales numbers, but things are good. Last year they went from 20 employees to 200, and in May they added 22 phone lines to keep up with inquiries. And stores like Walgreens and Hallmark can't keep them on the shelves. There's even talk of a Silly Bandz float this year for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Bavaria Beer at FIFA World Cup 2010 and Other Scene Stealing Marketing Stunts

On Monday's World Cup game of Denmark vs. The Netherlands, thirty-two women attended the game disguised in Denmark gear--only to take to the stands and strip off their Denmark colors to reveal some short orange dresses in support of Holland.

The audience seemed to fully enjoy it as some of the girls commented everyone wanted a photo with them. The problem is that the dresses were provided by Dutch beer brewer, Bavaria beer, and the World Cup happens to be sponsored by Budweiser. This resulted in the women being ejected from the stands with several arrests and a long day of questioning on Tuesday.

The stunt was said by South African officials to be in violation of strict commercial regulations at the matches. Ironically, the women have now received a ton of media coverage--spreading the good word that hot girls like Dutch soccer and Dutch beer.

Ironically, the dress, which comes with the purchase of a pack of Bavaria beer, is currently the only piece of World Cup paraphernalia actually being made strictly for women. If you ask us, it's a pretty brilliant marketing stunt. Yesterday, I'd never heard of the beer. Today, it's all over the news.

That got us thinking about some other great marketing stunts at sporting events. Sometimes it takes breaking the rules to stand out, and these products we remember.

Football in Your Urinal: ESPN placed little soccer goals inside of urinals at various sporting events with the slogan: Football when you want it.

Get Paid to Streak: It's no doubt that big events tend to attract people who like to streak. It's happened at Wimbledon, awards shows and more. If you have a penchant to get naked in front of millions of people, why not get a sponsor? In 2002 at rugby's Bledisloe Cup two streakers blasted across the field with a Vodaphone logo on their backs. The match happened to be at Telstra stadium, a competitor of Vodaphone.

A Concert During the Game: And in another page from guerrilla advertising by a Dutch beer company, Heineken made some big football fans think they'd have to sit through a concert instead of actually watch a big match. They were mistaken.

Twitter Tips for Followers of Fashion Trends

Twitter is always a pretty darn good resource for deal hunting. So much so that a while ago Sara posted an article on the 30 Deal Hunters to Follow on Twitter.

Their deals were so juicy, I decided to a do a fashion edition--particularly as some of you may have just jumped into the summer shopping season.

So, without further ado, here are the Top 10 Frugal Fashionistas to follow on Twitter:

@file_fashion not only provides some great coupons and deals, but also lives up to its fashion blog tag line: "online shopaholic available for hire in any online shopping quest."

@BagSnob is a must follow for anyone with a penchant for pretty purses. Never spend another penny on a couture clutch before reading BagSnob's reviews on her designer handbag blog. Despite snob's snobby online identity, there are some great giveaways coming from this feed as well.

@rackedla and @rackedny are like reading Carrie Bradshaw's personal fashion diary. Neither specifically provide deals, but they are the place to read about the New York and LA fashion scene and to discover new designers.

@coolmompicks provides a great resource for affordable fashion and general gift ideas for the whole family. With mommy bloggers ruling the world, a good list would not be a good list without at least one awesome mom blogger included.

@HauteLook is a great resource for limited time sale events on designer brands.

@fashionsteals watches and posts about sample sales and fashion events so you don't have to.

@Coupon Tweet has a pretty amazing aggregated list of tweets from around the online nexus and categorizes the deals into neat categories, including, but of course, fashion.

@ShopItToMe is kind of like your own personal shopper, tracking down name brand trending deals, and posting them in their feed.

@stylehive is better than your InStyle magazine. They find the cutest things for every season, and they post high end stuff as well as baubles for pocket change.

@ShoeSmitten is your guide to heels and steals. If you have a shoe fetish, follow this woman, she understands!

In your continued quest to find the top fashion trends and, of course, best fashion deals on the web, be sure to also follow all your favorite retailers who will likely post the most current deals for their stores and online shopping. Beach Bound? Check Out Our Swimsuit 2010 Picks!

A great 1960s-era shot of Liz Taylor enjoying the beach will grace next month's cover of Vanity Fair--and post-Memorial Day weekend, that got us thinking about the beach ourselves. This week, we take a look at the best swimsuits for summer 2010.

Monokini: The monokini has a funny name, but a very flirty style. The throwback look made a comeback last summer, and it seems it's here to stay. Basically it's like a bikini with a tiny bit more fabric. Target has a great selection of cute monokinis this season--all around $30--and right now we've got a Target coupon for $5 off $50 or more (in case you want to splurge and buy 2 new suits for the season).

Off the Shoulder: A nice variation on the traditional bikini, is the off the shoulder version, which is sure to be seen on the beach this summer. We're loving this retro looking stripey number from Nicolita, which is on the pricey side with the top running $64 and the bottom running $57. One way to up date your beach look is to simply buy a new top and pair with a basic black bottom--likely available at your local department store at a reasonable price.

The Suit None of Your Friends with Have: Maybe you've got a crazy summer lined up where lots of people will actually see you in your suit, and you're looking for the perfect one to stand out in the crowd. If so, take a gander at the Kerry Bikini halter style with denim trim. This is definitely a splurge item, at $180, but man is it cute. If you're hitting Saint Barts, a fancy tropical wedding, or the like, it might be worth it.

Retro Pin-Up Girl Suits: If you got inspired by that hot white number Liz is wearing, then maybe a retro suit is for you. The great thing about the retro pin-up girl look is that it's flattering on many body types and the look is classic, so it doesn't really go out of style. That said, the retro look can also carry a bigger price tag. We do love these looks from BabygirlBoutique that range in price from $60 to $150.

Shoes On, Shoes Off: Cushe Comfort (Almost) Like Walking on Air

Slip on shoes might conjure images of Grandmas wearing orthopedic specials but comfy slip-ons aren't just for Grandma anymore. Full disclosure here, Onlineshoes.com provided a free pair of the new brand: Cushe shoes--but if I didn't like 'em, I wouldn't write about 'em.

The Cushe brand, which launched in the US this year, is being called an "urban life style brand," and has three collections under the brand represent "[D]ifferent parts of our life, which when combined are designed to make us get out and do everything that makes life cushe," says Martin Dean, Creative Director at Cushe.

Cushe is a pretty good way to describe the shoe. The Mia Remy pair which I've been wearing pretty much since I received them, are indeed incredibly comfortable. The woman's lycra strap style suits itself for socks or no socks making them great for spring warm or cooler days, and carrying them through summer.

The shoe is definitely the ultimate in casual wear and may not be suitable for a more formal office, but the closed-toe model might fit in just fine in a business casual setting. That said, they'd fit in a large purse and would be pretty perfect for the office goer who walks or bikes to work, or needs a pair of kicks for walking around the city before changing into an office pair of heels.

Additionally, the sign of a well-made shoe is the break-in period. A testament to Cushe comfort, I've not had to endure a breaking in period with these shoes...no signs of blisters or discomfort to be had anywhere.

That said, the price point on these shoes feels a bit high. With spokespeople like musician Bonobo behind the product, it's evident Cushe is trying to market themselves as a high-end brand. Without a cross-fit purpose encompassed in the shoe, $55 to $100 bucks seems a bit pricey. For that reason, I give the shoes one and 3/4 thumbs up (minus 1/4 thumb for cost).

Miss USA 2010: Lingerie Photo Spread Another Example of "Sex Sells"?

This week history was made when the first Arab American woman was crowned Miss USA. You may have missed that headline, but you may not have missed last week's trending topic, and highly "controversial" commentary on the new lingerie spread that replaced the typical ball gowns worn by Miss USA contestants.

Resident billionaire and pageant owner Donald Trump seemed to revel in the controversy the pictures created. Before the pageant aired he told the The Insider, "We are in a different age. They are a little bit sexy but I'll tell you what--everybody's watching, so I have no problems with it."

But the big question was, would everybody be watching a sixty-year-old pageant with many outdated traditions that has steadily been decreasing in the ratings since its heyday in the 70s and 80s?

According to the Nielsen ratings system, the pageant hit its all-time high in the ratings in 1979 with 38 million viewers. It turns out the 2010 pageant viewership was up from 5 million viewers last year to 5.3 million viewers this year, still its second-lowest showing since the program hit the airwaves.

So maybe the nearly nude photo spread helped score a few extra eyeballs despite the fact some Miss USA contestants have lost or nearly lost their crowns for similar racy leaked photos not officially sanctioned by the pageant or blessed by the Trumpmeister.

That said, commercial spot costs during the television event have dwindled right along with viewers eyeballs. According to Daily Finance, the all time high price for a thirty-second spot was in 2005 at a price tag of $215,000. Last year, the same spots sold for $70,000.

But for the pageant itself, maybe the controversy worked. In March, NBC renewed its agreement with the pageant and Donald Trump to carry the program for three more years.

What do think about the sex sells philosophy? Think about those Go Daddy ads during the Super Bowl, or those famously nude famous women posing for PETA. And does sex have a place in a 60 year-old Miss USA pageant that was originally created so women would not have to pose in a swimsuit?

Spring Fashion Trends: Three Must-Have Items for Less

Hot looks for Spring are gracing the pages of our favorite magazines everywhere. And with Mother Nature bringing in the sunshine, Spring can be a pretty fun time to cash in on some fun trends. But how do we treat ourselves without breaking the bank?

Here's a look at three must have Spring trends and some affordable and wearable alternatives.

Denim: No, it's not 1992, nor a bad John Hughes movie. Nonetheless, denim is back in a big way. On the runway denim has been appearing wild with studs and lace and all kinds of dressed up like this number from Louis Vuitton.

You can bring denim into your life in this season in more simple and affordable ways. Now's not a bad time to turn to your old friend Gap where affordable denim rompers and blazers abound for under a hundred bucks. If you're the super crafty type 'tis the season to recycle those old jeans into some nifty denim accessories for the hair, ears, or just about anything you can dream up. Digital Prints: Heavily influenced by the last show of Alexander McQueen (RIP) digital prints are popping up everywhere. His 2010 collection was heavy on animal prints as well as collages and interstellar clouds. A McQueen dress usually runs around $800, and Spring ready-to-wear collection has yet to go on sale. So, where can one find deals fit for a McQueen-a-holic?

My personal favorite item we found was the yellow animal print dress from Firetrap, and it runs $75. Nothing says Spring like the color yellow, and you'll be paying McQueen homage along with your pocketbook.

Stiletto Sandal: This stiletto sandal is going to be seen on a lot of feet this Spring and Summer. With this item you can certainly spend as much or as little as you like as both name brands, vanity brands, and your local department store are likely to carry some version of the strappy stiletto sandal like the one pictured here from Target. It'll run you a cool forty bucks, but it should last you two seasons with its muted earth tones. And for the price, maybe you can go out and find yourself a pair of strappy stilettos in bright red as well--because red will compliment your new denim vest quite nicely.

Glam it Up: Celebrity-Inspired Mother's Day 2010 Gift Ideas

Yep, we are definitely in countdown to the Mother of all holidays (pun intended). We thought we'd take a look at how a few fashion-savvy celebrity moms make themselves feel glam to give you a few more gift ideas for that very special lady in your life.

Angelina Jolie is probably the ultimate nomadic mother--always on the go all around the world. If you know a busy, on-the-go mom who likely doesn't have the budget to have nannies schlep around all the stuff for the kids, consider a new over-sized purse. Gwen Stefani always looks so glam even when just stepping out for a stroll with one of her little guys. She never seems to leave home without a some vivid red lipstick, enough to brighten anyone's day. A few new lipsticks are a great gift idea for any mom. Odds are she's been thriftily using the same one until it runs out. Bath and Body Works has a great selection of make-up and pampering products and is currently offering $10 off orders of $30 or more.

Bobbi Brown is also a great source for a new shade of lipcolor. The site even has a section of Mother's Day gift ideas specifically for Lipstick Lovers.

eBay Fashion Vault: The Newest Online Designer Outlet Mall

This past week eBay launched a new fashion site, and fashion divas everywhere rejoiced. Seriously, us fashion-savvy ladies have long known eBay is a great resources for finding some original steals, but with its new site, fashion.ebay.com, now you can even be guided to great stuff by some famous stylists, and get super steals on high-end brands.

Here are some of the great features the new site has to offer.

Logistically there is now a Fashion Tab right on eBay's home page which will give customers access to its Fashion Vault.
Whenever you search from something you will now be directed to "More Like This" to help you find lots of options.
You can shop a different brand each week that will be offered at a discount on the homepage of the store.
If you're a Vintage junkie eBay has now organized Vintage into its own category on the front page of the vault.
Narcisso Rodriguez and other designers in the future will be creating original collections for the site.
There will be fashion-conscious and tip-worthy vlogs and blogs from celebrity stylists like Annabell Tollman and Britt Bardo who consult and dress for the likes of Scarlett Johansson, and Jessica Simpson.
