If you're anything like me, you like free shipping the way you like
ice cream and shoulder rubs. Nothing wrecks an online shopping
experience more than getting to the checkout page and discovering
you're on the hook for $10, $20, or even more for shipping.
That's why I'm partial to ShopRunner, a nifty service that,
among other things, assures you free shipping at more than 70
stores. Even better than that, free two-day
shipping.
Alas, the service costs $79 annually, making it something of
an impulse buy even for hardcore shoppers.

That alone makes it an interesting buy, if only because most
tablets of this size tend to sell for a lot more. The Nexus 10, for
example: $399. The iPad: $499 and up. Even the new Asus MeMo Pad
Smart 10 runs $299.
Of course, the ChefPad doesn't have quite the same level of
hardware.

Got an iPhone? Run, don't walk (virtually speaking), to the App
Store and download
Google Search. Go ahead, I'll wait.
As you might expect, Google Search endows your iPhone (or iPod
Touch or iPad) with the power of, well, Google search. Perhaps
you're already using Google as the search engine in your Safari Web
browser, but the app takes things to a whole new level.
First and foremost, it supports voice-powered searching, which
works with startling, almost magical accuracy.

A couple weeks ago I shared some
thoughts on owning an ultrabook, ultimately
trying to answer the question of whether these thinner, lighter
laptops are worth the money.
See, I'd just purchased a Lenovo IdeaPad U310, which at the
time seemed like a great bargain. But having spent some additional
hours with not only that model, but also a Samsung Series 9, I
wanted to hit this topic one more time.
As I noted previously, "ultrabook" is neither a brand nor a
generic classification, but rather an Intel-created marketing
term.

Every year, laptops go missing by the millions. Because they're
small and highly portable (natch), they're easy pickings for
thieves. I have several friends and family members whose homes were
robbed, and every one of them lost at least one laptop. Talk about
a rotten day.
However, while stolen TVs and jewelry can't call for help, laptops
can--if you stock them with theft-recovery software. And by all
accounts your best option is Absolute Software's LoJack for
Laptops.
It's not what I would call a super-cheap solution, but at least
there's a deal to be had:
Buy one LoJack subscription, get a second for 50
percent off.

If you spend a lot of time in the car, nothing beats
audiobooks.
Of course, unless you check them out from the library, they
don't come cheap. Even if you subscribe to a service like Audible,
you're looking at around $15 minimum per book.
I suppose it goes without saying that you won't find Stephen
King or Toni Morrison in this collection.
