Perhaps you received a clutch of gift cards for the holidays, or
the New Year has you cleaning out your wallet of neglected plastic
with small, unused balances. Getting the most out them isn't
always easy, especially with all of the conditions that issuers and
retailers impose on card holders. Read on as we tackle the
most common complaints surrounding gifts cards!

Recently (
Monday?)
PayPal pissed off a lot of people. You may have seen the story on
Jezebel,
Consumerist, or a bunch of other outlets: Regretsy collected $2 donations from thousands of users to buy toys for needy kids for Christmas via a PayPal "Donate" button. PayPal froze the account and went on to provide a very nice example of how not to treat your users. Anyway, last I heard it was being worked out--someone at PayPal issued an apology and promised a donation to the Regretsy cause.
Still for many people online it was one more nail in the coffin of PayPal. All you have to do is a little Googling to read page after page of complaints against them. So here are a handful of viable alternatives I was able to find while looking online. There are pros and cons to all of them, and most likely you will still need a PayPal account in order to pay some online sellers. But you should definitely check these out:

Holidays
The holidays are rapidly approaching and not only does that mean
spending time with family and leaving milk and cookies out for
Santa, but, for many of us, it also creates angst over budgeting
and making ends meet. The holiday season is the biggest
retail period of the year, and, according to American Express,
Americans will spend an average of $831 on gifts this year--17%
more than in 2010.
Luckily, there are a number of ways for the savviest consumers to
save, and, for those with excellent credit, the right credit card
can help you save up to $500.

On its surface, the
Sony credit card seems to be a great deal. It
earns five Sony bonus points per $1 spent on Sony products, three
points per $1 spent on dining and movies, and one point per $1
spent elsewhere. And even better, it seems that Sony points are
actually worth what you'd expect. Many rewards programs give you 1
point per $1, only to devalue the points so that your effective
rewards rate is much lower.
So when I saw that the Sony card wasn't playing into such
gimmickry, I got excited. Then I read a little closer.

Of course fee-based banking services (checking, credit cards,
etc.) have always been around, but they've become much more
common ever since the "The Great Recession" happened. The banks are
sure reaping hefty profits from this practice, and in turn,
spending lots of money on marketing to try and convince us their
fee-based products makes sense...but do they? Are you wasting money
on a "premium" credit card's annual fee? Or a fee-based checking
account?
