About Michaels
Michaels was founded when Michael J. Dupey took over a failing five-and-dime store and converted it into an arts and crafts store in Dallas, Texas. Dupey had a great eye for design and grew the business to 11 retail locations by 1982. The business was then purchased by Dallas businessman Sam Wyly, who took it public in 1984. Michaels grew with acquisitions of other craft and framing stores such as Aaron Brothers, and partnerships with celebrities like Martha Stewart. Michaels also produces its own line of products such as Celebrate It, Artist’s Loft, and Foamies, among many others. Today, Michaels has more than 1,200 locations across the U.S. and Canada, and as of 2021, has returned to being a privately-held company.
