Martine Rothblatt founded Satellite CD Radio in 1990, quickly stirring up controversy by petitioning the FCC to designate unused radio frequencies for satellite radio broadcasts. This move angered radio stations nationwide but created the building blocks for what would later become satellite radio. Meanwhile, Lon Levin and Gary Parsons, founders of XM Satellite Radio, capitalized on Satellite Radio’s petition to expand from their original satellite broadcasting capabilities for phones and fax machines. The duo searched for a new way to utilize their satellite broadcasting capabilities, eventually popularizing XM through installation in GM, Honda, and Toyota vehicles in 2000 and growing exponentially as a result. In 2007, XM and Satellite CD Radio joined in a $13 billion merger to create SiriusXM, which has since grown to boast a subscriber count of over 150 million listeners.
