Signing Time came about as one mother's journey to communicate with her deaf daughter; by teaching her baby, and learning signs herself, Rachel Coleman found that by eighteen months, her girl could sign sentences that most hearing children would find difficult at the same age. When her second daughter was born with spina bifida, Rachel discovered that baby sign language would help her communicate with children struggling with other challenges as well. Together with her sister, Rachel created an engaging, accessible video to educate hearing children in sign language.
After distributing it to family and friends, the two women experienced an outpouring of interest from those who heard of the video from word of mouth. Two Little Hands Productions sprang from that interest as parents with hearing children heard about the benefits of baby sign language: higher IQ, better adjustment, reading at an earlier age, and a reduction in stormy temper tantrums during the terrible twos.
A wide variety of products are available at their site to support learning at any time: there are 26 different volumes of the program out on DVD, as well as Baby Signing Time, for infants and toddlers; thematic Songs, and CDs with the pleasing music for children (also used in the production of the DVDs). The board books help reinforce the concepts, and flash cards are great for practicing signs.
