It's tax time, and that
can only mean one thing: a big, fat refund check. (Well, okay, it might mean a
big, fat payment check, in which case this is probably not the post for you.)
Sure, you could put that
extra cash in the bank. Or use it to pay bills or buy food. BO-RING! Wouldn't
you rather treat yourself to a new gadget -- especially if it's one that can
save you money, improve your health, or encourage you to read more?
I've rounded up five
way-cool gadgets that are perfect for tax-refund splurging.

A month ago, if you'd asked me what I thought of 3D HDTVs, I'd have
called them a fad, a gimmick, and a waste of money.
Then I bought one.
See, my three-year-old Toshiba flat panel had died a sudden and
unexpected death. It would have cost more to repair it than to
replace it, so I opted for the latter.
Needless to say, I was done with Toshiba. I wanted a TV of roughly
the same size (okay, maybe a little bigger -- prices have come down
quite a bit, after all), but when I started shopping, I had zero
intention of choosing a 3D model.
That's because although I had enjoyed "Avatar" in the movie theater
as much as the next fan, I didn't see much need for 3D at home.
What's more, I'd recently reviewed a 3D-capable home projector, and
although it was kind of cool, the battery-powered "active" glasses
that went with it were a hassle to keep charged -- and ridiculously
overpriced at $100 per pair.

I'm a big fan of big monitors. If you're still squinting into an old 17-inch tube or 19-inch LCD, it's time to think about an upgrade.

I'm usually appalled when my mother asks for detailed Christmas lists for each member of our family in October. "Really?!" I want to scream, "I haven't even got the last stitches in the Halloween costumes, and you want Christmas lists?" Instead, I smile and politely oblige, having no other choice if I want to keep peace in the family.
This year, however, after spending several days compiling these lists (after all, I don't want my children getting toys they have no interest in, or worse yet, socks, for Christmas), I had an epiphany: I could get my shopping done in November, save some much cherished cash, and enjoy the entire month of December by baking, playing with my family, and not stressing about shopping!
No, I haven't thanked my dear mother, but I did learn some interesting information about the best things to buy, and not to buy, in November.

It's official: the HP TouchPad is dead. Wait, what? Didn't
HP launch its much-ballyhooed
iPad competitor just last month? And didn't I
review it just a few weeks ago? There must be some mistake.

Money Saving Tips
I'm all for splurging a bit when it comes to a big TV for the living room. But for a den, dorm room, bedroom, or other small space, you don't need anything too fancy.
Here's a perfect candidate.
Walmart has the
Viore LC22VH56PB 22-inch LCD HDTV for $139.99, plus sales tax in most states. Shipping is free if you use the ship-to-store option; otherwise it's $8.
