Which portrait studio has the best all around deal, price and quality?

Wondering if anyone has any feedback on Sears, JcPenney, Target or?

I'm wondering about this also -- was just doing some searches and finding $500 prices easy! Yikes!

I know this may sound obvious, but they best way to get good portrait studio pictures (all portrait studios are NOT equal in quality or service or price) is to look around at your friends' homes and if you see something you like, ask where they were done. Also, instead of using a mass production studio such as Sears, Target, JC Penny, etc check the bulletin boards in your local coffee shops for photographers' cards who do portraits. A professional photographer will not only make your portraits look better but you can work on the price with them, plus they may come to you. Look...would you buy your car parts at the grocery store? Then why oh why would you get portraits done at a department store?!?!?!?! I know that used to be the norm but with so many good photographers out there, you have far more choices than the big stores.

An important note - if you get your portraits done at Sears, JC Penny, etc, your pictures will look just like every other person's who got their photo there. Does that sound like a unique photo situation to you?

Craigslist.org is another good source for local photographers. Just be sure to see some samples and agree on a package, then only pay once you have the photos.

I personally like the Picture People. they always have out free photo coupons. I have always loved their pictures and they have great props for kids to make the pictures unique. JC penny's always has coupons for great packages but they charge sitting fees as do sears and other studios. I haven't had a lot of luck with the JC Penny's photographers and working with kids though.

Another great place is the picture studios in Babies R Us. they offer free pictures on birthday's and they have trained photographers to work with the kids and get good pictures.

You have to keep in mind that all of these big chains are independently owned/operated, so what's great where I live might be terrible where you live. It really just depends on the luck of the draw. For a going-to-the-studio experience, I agree with RealDeal that your best bet is to ask around.

On the other hand, if you want quality pics of your kids, say, you're never going to beat the experience of having a professional photographer come shoot at your house or on location. That's obviously going to cost a lot more than a $9 Picture People special or whatever, but I've noticed that Groupon and Living Social and the like seem to frequently offer photog specials, so it's something to keep an eye out for if you're willing to venture outside the studio.
