When travelling is it more cost efficent to use ATMs or credit cards?
I don't want to get stung by fees and trying to find the best way to manage. Open to any tips!

Some credit cards have better exchange policies than others, so if you have more than one credit card don't assume that they will charge the same amount to exchange money. Also avoid "double exchanges" meaning don't exchange money in to Euros then go to a country that doesn't use Euros, like the Czech Republic or Croatia, and exchange Euros for their currency. |

I travel internationally to Asia alot and I find that carrying currencies and/or travelers checks are acceptable and of course w/ the occasional use of the credit card if necessary. Yes, be warned on those "extra fees" when using your credit cards or even check cards. Be sure to notify your bank and credit card companies that you are going abroad or they'll freeze your account and you'll be left hanging (yup, I've experienced it when I was in college) until you get that situated. (Situated in the means of calling your bank or credit card company via international call which means more $$$$ on fees) BLECH! I'd also recommend you talk to yourcredit card company and/or bank for advice on what you need to know when traveling to the country your are going to. Hope this helps. Happy trip! |

Re: When travelling is it more cost efficent to use ATMs or credit cards?Working in hotel industry I would highly recommend Traveler's Checks. It's very easy to lose a purse, wallet or have something stolen (distasteful I know) but I've witness people lose a lot. Also, don't be afraid to ask hotel to place your credit cards/traveler's check in their vault. |

Re: When travelling is it more cost efficent to use ATMs or credit cards?I completely agree with the above comments, calling your bank or CC company ahead of time and using Travelers check are great tips. I also make sure to limit what I take with me - for instance I won't carry my debit and credit card. Personally, only carrying my credit card makes me feel better just in case my card is stolen - I don't have the hassle of bounced checks or other such issues from my bank account when I get home. |
