How do you save on gas?

Is there any way to save on gas? It's such a big part of my monthly expenses, and I just don't know how to be smart about buying it. Is there such thing as a gas coupon? I've never heard of anything like that, aside from stuff like credit/ debit cards that reward you for gas purchases.

Our car has a display that shows us the average miler per gallon of a trip. We reset it and try to get it as high as possible. We make it a game. Coast to stop lights, accelerate slower and remember that every MPH over 65 is reducing your mileage a lot!

Re: How do you save on gas?

Oh, good idea! My car doesn't have that kind of display, but I'm sure I could figure out my average mpg of a trip. That's a smart tactic to make it a game! I know that some people are really into "hypermiling," or doing everything possible to reduce their average mpg. (My coworker wrote an interesting blog post about it, actually: http://bit.ly/zj1FJg) I need to start being more conscious about these things!

I purchase gift cards from my local grocery store for purchases that I was going to make anyway. My grocery store (Price Chopper NE) gives you $0.10 off per gallon of gas for every $50 you purchase. When we got new windows put in our house, I purchase thousands in Lowes gift cards - earned 5 free tanks of gas, and use those gift cards to pay for the windows!

Re: How do you save on gas?

@iamthatlady That's really smart! I need to find a local grocery store here that does that!

Re: How do you save on gas?

Don't drive! Ha. It's good to live close to where you work, but of course not all people can do this. Other options being public transit or carpooling. Walk or bike if you can, and limit the amount of trips you make out for errands. If you can keep errands close together in both time and location, then you'll be saving both time and money on gas.

Re: How do you save on gas?

We have a gas station near us that will double competitor's gas coupons on Tuesdays. So if I have a coupon for $0.05 off, they double it to take $0.10 off per gallon!

Re: How do you save on gas?

We only have one car. My husband rides his bike to school and we walk to and from picking the kids up from school. the only time we drive is to go to church or the grocery store, or on a family outing. We have been able to save SO much by walking and riding bikes as much as possible. When we do buy gas we compare prices and got a shared costco card with my mom since we have no stores here that do gas discounts. Our goal is just to only drive when we have to!

Re: How do you save on gas?

Luckily I drive a Scion ( yes on of the box cars) and I love $35 bucks and my tank is full So I haven't been affected as much as people with bigger cars.

Re: How do you save on gas?

I try to combine errands into a few trips as possible. We live far from "town" so I don't like to drive all the way in unless I have to. We also use the better gas mileage car when we take family outings. It's also helpful to keep your car well maintained, not drive (if you can help it) during peak traffic times, and don't speed too much.

Re: How do you save on gas?

Some of my favorite ways to save on gas are to dive less, use fuel rewards, keep my car tuned up and no tot speed. I've also got a blog post about the topic here with a lot more details: http://www.bargainblessings.com/2011/07/…

Re: How do you save on gas?

We always make sure that tire pressure is where it should be. Also plan our route before leaving the house so we can save gas and time.

Re: How do you save on gas?

We keep our tire pressure at the right level too. That is a big saver. We also try to combine trips. My kids are in sports and dance, but I found places really close to our house. I usually don't go anywhere further than 2 miles from my house during the week.

That makes up for my husbands 80 mile round trip commute!

Re: How do you save on gas?

We are a part of a car pool for school. Another family lives close to us and we share the driving responsibilities so neither one of us has to go in every time. That definitely helps save on gas for both of us!

Re: How do you save on gas?

I also utilize the rewards points offered at grocery stores. Plus, they offered a Visa Credit Card and the 1st 3 months, once you hit the 100 points on grocery purchases, you get $.25 off each gallon when you purchase gas at their station - in addition to the rewards accumulated on purchases. I about fainted when the little machine said I had a discount of $.75 a gallon. Since I'm one of goons that pays the balance each month, I'm literally having a gas!

Re: How do you save on gas?

In addition to many of the suggestions above, we like to buy our gas at Costco. Not only are they significantly cheaper, but we get 4% back on our credit card when we buy our gas there.

Re: How do you save on gas?

We always try to buy our gas at Costco and that definitely helps. We've also been really trying to drive less and consolidate more small trips which can really add up quickly!

Re: How do you save on gas?

The biggest way we save on gas is being prepared - not letting your tank get below half full & planning out your road trips using Gas Buddy to know the best places to stop for lower gas prices. Also, taking advantage of any special promos going on at your grocery stores - we often have double (or even triple) rewards for gas when you buy certain gift cards (esp around the holidays) - so we watch for those discounts as well.
