What is your "small change"?

The whole motto of Savings Nation is that there is "no such thing as small change". Drastic changes can happen to your budget, and dramatic savings can stack up just through small changes.

Joining this community is a great first step in making positive changes in your finances. What is your "small change" that you plan to make this year to change your budget and your life?

I cut out soda! It adds up after a while.

I limited myself to eating out for only one meal during the week. It's really tempting to go out to lunch during the work week, but it adds up so quickly.

Re: What is your "small change"?

Well, our small change has been adding up for ten years, and the financial goal we were saving for will be reality in a few months. Can't wait to lounge on this and chuckle at all the people who don't think "small change" makes a difference.

I pack my lunch everyday, usually leftovers from dinner. That saves us a ton instead of ordering out or eating in the school cafeteria.

Cooking in bulk has saved us both time and money. I never did it before because I didn't want to spend more time in the kitchen initially, but now I realize how WORTH the extra 30 minutes is when I don't have to cook at all for a good 3-7 days. It also guarantees that we won't be tempted to order out, which sucks up a lot of your budget.

I plant a large garden. This allows my family to eat fresh healthy foods all year round by canning and freezing! It also cuts the grocery bill.

For my Grocery Budget & Spending Budget I always use cash. I also never use correct change. I always break the bill. I then deposit all the coins I am given in change to a jar. That jar adds up fast, and we use that money for vacation & Christmas each year.

Re: What is your "small change"?

I vow to never, ever let my gas points expire at the grocery store gas station. I still have bruises where I kicked myself last month for letting them fall off the edge. Time has been flying by so quickly that it was a new period before I even knew it! What's funny is that I'm so strategic with my shopping to maximize the gas points. Argh.

@ThriftyTiff - isn't it sad that so many people can't count back change without the register? I used to think it was fun to do change games to see who could count it back and who couldn't. It just got too sad so I stopped.

Have you ever read The Christmas Jars by Jason F Wright?

Re: What is your "small change"?

My small change is to meal plan every week. I am pretty good at this but want to commit to it every week. Not only does it help me save money but I makes it so much less stressful when I already know what is planned for dinner. I always write down where the recipe is located on my meal plan too. That way if my husband gets home before me, he can start dinner.

We buy tons of fruit in season (peaches, apples, strawberries) and can to eat during the winter. We also make homemade jam. Our favorite is strawberry rhubarb jam.

Re: What is your "small change"?

What a great forum!

I've been making many changes in the recent year to support a tighter budget. I gave up my bad habit of smoking cigarettes for starter (it adds up tremendously quick!) and I tried to spend less money going out in addition to becoming a fiend for hunting for awesome deals, discounts and coupons! It’s really the little things that add up!
