Has anyone tried dumpster diving?

I'm thinking of trying dumpster diving. Has anyone tried it? Any advice for a first-timer?

Re: Has anyone tried dumpster diving?

Did you dive yet? Are you thinking recycle spots for coupon inserts or just general diving? I would never rule it out and there is one place in town that has a great spot, sad but great. The Task Force (county run thrift store) unfortunately tosses many of the items people donate. They've got strict rules and regs but people don't know that when they donate and instead of them just taking it over to the Goodwill store, they put it in the dumpster. There are many treasures to be found, especially furniture type stuff that the set by the dumpster.

I haven't done it in a while because I'm like a weeble - I wouldn't fall down but I might fall in and not be able to get out!

I haven't gone yet! I'm thinking general diving: I'm looking for stuff like furniture or appliances, or maybe even packaged food. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to actually go in the dumpster- yet? I'm going to start with just seeing what's on top or right next to the dumpster, haha. I'll keep you posted!

If you're lucky you can find one of those grabber things that people use to nab things on upper shelves. That way you can just reach in and pluck stuff out while looking at the sky and whistling

(singing) don we now our dive apparel - fah rah rah fa rah rah rah rah rah

You can also watch garage sale cycles. Here, on Sundays after garage sales are over, the peoples pack up what didn't sell and take it to the task force. Then on Monday the task force sets half of what they got by their dumpster. Or, people just set the stuff that didn't sell out on the curb with the trash. Tooling around on garbage day can be beneficial. Not like I've done it or anything (innocent look)

The grabber thing is a great idea! I might have to give that a try. And I hadn't thought of watching garage sale cycles- also a great idea! Thanks for the tips.

We live on base housing, and there are 3 different trash compost areas, all have recycle bins, a bulk trash bin, then the general trash. There is always good stuff sitting outside the bulk trash bins. I am guessing mostly from military families moving, and can not take the items with them?! Anyways, I always drive past on the weekends because there just may be a good find sitting outside the trash bin. (that is as close to dumpster diving as I have gotten)

Go to big hotel dumpsters, I'm not kidding. We had to throw away old furniture, bedding, etc, but not that they were horrible, we just changed everything out one year. Any place that's industrial based would be a good direction. I once went to our dumpster only to find one of the store owners (hotel had a few stores on street level) perched on the corner of the dumpster. Scared the bee-jeez out of me. Then we laughed about it for days.

@ChuckG, that's a great idea! I might give it a try. I'll let you guys know if I actually try this, I still haven't quite gotten up the nerve, haha.
