"Low-balling" people on Craigslist: is it ethical?

Recently, there was a controversial post on Reddit in which a user suggested searching Craigslist for the term "moving" in order to find people who were selling things because they were moving This user then suggested "low-balling" the seller, because they're likely to take a low price due to their having a deadline on selling their possessions. The thread is here: http://bit.ly/PeMyiN (warning: some comments on the thread contain NSFW language).

Personally, I don't think that's an okay thing to do. I think it takes advantage of the seller being under a deadline, and probably being stressed. What's your take?

Re: "Low-balling" people on Craigslist: is it ethical?

I don't think it's unethical, I just think it's not cool. The person is moving. Fact. That person needs to move things fast. Fact. They will accept a low-ball offer because they cannot be bothered to take those items with them. They could always donate it. Or throw it away. But to get something sometimes instead of nothing is better. I have never considered looking for people who are moving to see what they are selling and then offering them a low offer.

It's crafty, maybe a little ingenious, maybe a little devious, but the seller is the one who's really in the hard spot. If they don't have the time to sell the item it's best just to get rid of it. Remember, they are keeping what they want and selling what they want to get rid of, that's how I'm looking at it.
