October is officially National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Founded in 1985, this annual campaign represents the combined efforts of numerous charitable organizations and foundations to educate the public about breast cancer as well as raise money to help breast cancer research and ultimately a cure for this deadly disease. In addition, Breast Cancer Awareness month offers the opportunity to remind women of the necessity for breast cancer screenings as early detection is the best hope for treating the disease.
In the 25 years that the National Breast Cancer Awareness month has occurred, millions of dollars has been raised to fight the disease. Along the way, more and more companies have joined the campaign, showing their support for Breast Cancer research with their own annual "pink ribbon" programs. Sometimes these programs take the form of special "pink" products with a portion of the sales revenue being donated to breast cancer charities like the Susan G. Komen foundation. October will see a big influx of breast cancer sales, breast cancer deals and breast cancer coupons. Shopping "pink" is one way you can help donate money for a cure for breast cancer.
Some of the money raised during National Breast Cancer Awareness month will go towards funding free or low cost mammograms for low-income women. Mammograms are an excellent diagnostic tool in the fight against breast cancer and women over 40 should make sure to be screened at least every two years. October is as good a time as any to make that mammogram appointment to screen for breast cancer.
October is also a month filled with all sorts of National Breast Cancer Awareness month activities. People will be walking for the cure, riding for the cure, running for the cure and even shopping for the cure thanks to the numerous breast cancer awareness promotions going on.
