I was born to a Presbyterian family in Henryville, Indiana. My father, Wilbur David Sanders, died when I was six years old, and, since my mother worked, I was required to cook for my family. I dropped out of school in seventh grade. When my mother remarried, I ran away from home because my stepfather beat me. I falsified my date of birth and enlisted in the United States Army at the age of sixteen, completing my entire service commitment in Cuba. During my early years, I held many jobs, including: steamboat pilot, insurance salesman, railroad fireman and farmer. I had a son, Harland, Jr., who died at an early age, and two daughters, Margaret Sanders and Mildred Sanders Ruggles.
