Is owning a smarthpone smart if the monthly bills put you in
the poorhouse? Not so much.
Thankfully, a growing number of upstart carriers are trying to
make smartphone pricing cheaper and more manageable.

Have you finally reached the end of that oppressive (and expensive) two-year contract with your mobile
phone carrier? Time to start shopping for cheaper alternatives.
It's a common misconception that you have to stick with the same service provider after your contract
expires. But there's a very good chance you can indeed shop around, as a number of upstart prepaid
carriers now offer similar (and in some cases better) service for considerably less money.
I'll use myself as an example – or, rather, my daughter. She has a hand-me-down iPhone 4 that's
currently part of our AT&T Family Plan. But her phone is out of contract, so we're under no obligation
to stick with AT&T. (My wife and I will be out of contract as well come October, so this will be a great
chance to test the waters with another, cheaper, service.)

Money Saving Tips
You already know what it's like to pay for your smartphone.
(And how!) Wouldn't it be nice if your smartphone could pay you for
a change?
It can, if you stock it with a few special apps. Just by going
about your daily routine -- shopping in stores, watching TV, and so
on -- you can earn points good for rewards, prizes, or even cash.
In most cases it costs nothing for the app or the service that
provides it. Your only investment is a few minutes of your
time.
Get paid to shop
The only thing better than finding a sale? Getting a reward
every time you set foot in a store, buy something, and/or point
your camera at a product.
CheckPoints, for example, rewards you for scanning
product barcodes, checking in at various stores, and completing
offers on your phone.

Let me guess: You're finally ready to make the move from your old
flip-phone or BlackBerry to a more modern smartphone, but you can't
stomach the $60-80 (or higher!) monthly fee that's going to come
with it.
Or perhaps your teenager has been clamoring for a smartphone,
but you're not willing to pay that same huge bill for something
that's primarily going to be used for texting and Angry Birds.
Surely there must be a more affordable option out there?
There is, finally. I've written about
Republic
Wireless a few times before, but there was always a waiting
list while the company slowly rolled out service to small batches
of customers. Now, thankfully, the deal is open to all.

Have you already bought your Halloween costumes? I haven't yet. A slew of Halloween stores just popped into my neighborhood for the Halloween season and it's been driving me crazy because the only thing my kids want to do is go to these stores.
Within recent weeks, they've developed a fond interest in looking at these strange creatures that are either missing one eye, have blood all over them or on the floor with missing limbs.
Putting aside the grotesque nature of Halloween, it's a day that kicks-off the holiday celebrations including Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and the New Year. So this week learn about saving money on Halloween goods, planning your holiday expenses and other money saving tips from our
DealPros.
Save on All Things HalloweenWhether you are shopping at an outlet store or a regular retail store like Target, those Halloween costs can add up very quickly. If you take your kids on the shopping trip with you, you are definitely doomed (

Planning to upgrade to the new iPhone 5? I don't blame you: with
its bigger screen, faster processor, better camera, and myriad of
other improvements, there's a lot to like.
Of course, this begs the question of what to do with your current
iPhone. Sure, you could sell it to help defray the cost of the new
one, but now that Ebay and trade-in services like Gazelle are
flooded with used models, you probably won't get the best buck for
the bang.
The smarter move might be to keep that old iPhone. Here are three
cool ways to give it a new lease on life.
1. Turn it into a no-contract phone
I'll bet your spouse or one of your kids would love to inherit
your old iPhone. Just one problem: You don't want to sign up for
another two-year contract or pay another $70-plus monthly for
service.
You don't have to. Now that your old iPhone is out of
contract, many carriers will allow you to keep it active on a
month-to-month plan.
