PHA: Empowering the Mississippi Delta

Partnership for a Healthier America was created in conjunction with former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Campaign. Since 2011, the nonprofit has focused on bringing fresh food to underserved communities. One of these communities includes the Mississippi Delta, which has the highest rate of obesity in the nation.

Working hand-in-hand with the Mississippi Delta’s community members, PHA established a vision for a better and sustainable food system. After identifying the most critical facets of this new system —involving young people, trying new things, and prioritizing local foodways— both PHA and Mississippi Delta community members brought the vision to life. In 2022, they hosted an event at a local grocery store, the first of many to gather the community around good food.
