Our Best Cyber Monday Deals

What is Cyber Monday?
Cyber Monday is the biggest online shopping day of the year! Hurray!

Thanksgiving has long marked the beginning of the holiday shopping season. For decades brands have competed for consumers’ hard-earned dollars as early as possible in the holiday season by offering super steep discounts called “doorbusters” on the Friday after Thanksgiving – or Black Friday. With more and more shoppers turning to online shopping, it was clear that online stores needed to compete as well. This led to the inception of Cyber Monday!

This was a term first used seven years ago in 2005, when it was announced that the Monday after Thanksgiving had been the biggest online shopping day of the year. Retailers quickly realized this was a great way to incentivize shoppers to continue to shop their wares and to keep up the momentum after Black Friday. Every year since, more and more retailers have begun to offer online sales and coupon codes on Cyber Monday. You’ve probably seen the Cyber Monday ads for TV deals and laptop deals for example. As a result, spending has increased dramatically. In 2010, 72% of online retailers participated in Cyber Monday, and 88% participated in 2011. According to the Savings.com Best Times to Buy Holiday Gifts infographic, in 2011 online shoppers spent $1.3 billion on Cyber Monday…that’s a whole lot of holiday shopping!

When is Cyber Monday 2012?
Cyber Monday is the first Monday after Thanksgiving. This year, it falls on Monday, November 26, 2012. Cyber Monday deals go live at 12:01AM local time, and they last throughout the day.

So if you don’t love the idea of standing in long lines this Black Friday, or if you’re still too full from Turkey Day to even thinking about serious shopping, hang in there because Cyber Monday is just days away!

5 Ways to Prepare for Cyber Monday from Savings.com DealPro, Crystal Collins, author of TheThriftyMama.com

1. Register ahead of time on the sites you plan to shop on. This way you don’t end up losing an item because you took too long to register.
2. Remember – until you have checked out, you are not guaranteed the item. Check out as quickly as possible!
3. Always check here for a coupon code before you do check out. You might just be able to save an extra 20%!
4. Figure out ahead of time how much you can spend. Otherwise it is super easy to get carried away! Trust me. I know…
5. Drink lots of coffee. If you’re dedicated to doing online shopping for your gifts this year…then yeah…coffee is a must!

Tips for Scoring Great Deals on Cyber Monday 2012 from Savings.com DealPro, Melissa King, founder of This Mommy Saves Money

1. Make a list, check it twice.

I like to make a list for each person, basically outlining what I’d like to get them and the amount I’m willing to spend up to on each gift. I also list “back up” gifts, in case I can’t find the exact products I’m looking for. Many stores will list their sales ahead of time, so you can plan everything out to maximize savings.

2. Read reviews!

Don’t just read product reviews, be sure to read site reviews also. Also be sure to find out what each store’s Return Policy is, just in case. Shop the big sites (Walmart, Kmart, etc). Smaller sites may not be as secure, which brings us to our next tip:

3. Be safe, be secure.

The only way to be sure you’re on a secure page is to check and see that the URL for the page begins with “https://” instead of “http://.” The “s” is to let you know the site is truly secure. Some browsers will also show a lock icon in the lower right corner of the browser window as a sign that you’re visiting a secure site.

4. Use legitimate sites.

CyberMonday.com and dealscybermonday.org will keep you up to date on the best and most accurate deals!
Compare prices on PriceGrabber.com to make sure you’re getting the best price on each item.
Score coupons at Savings.com to increase your savings drastically!

5. Score FREE shipping!

Save big by watching sites that offer free shipping. Don’t get sucked into buying more just to get the free shipping, though!

6. Print, print, print!

After you make a purchase, PRINT your confirmation or receipt! If you cannot print it, be sure to email it to yourself – even if you have to take a screen shot (CTRL+PRTSC or SHFT+CMD+4) so you have proof of your purchase.
