When most people shop for tech, they turn to Apple, Samsung, LG, Vizio, Microsoft, and Sony, but those brands’ products can be a real investment. Devices from TCL and Amazon Fire can be relatively affordable and dependable — but what about Onn Electronics, Walmart’s electronics brand?
Onn offers a long list of budget tech items with ridiculously low prices:
- A 50" UHD Roku TV for $178, a 65" version for $298, and a 75" home-entertainment monster for $398
- A 4K Google TV streaming device for under $45 (compare to Apple TV at $130 and up)
- A 7" tablet for $67, an 8" tablet for $97, and a 10" tablet for $118, at least one-third the price of a new iPad
Even Onn’s accessories are mind-blowingly cheap, like a wireless keyboard and mouse combo for under $20. But is this a case of “you get what you pay for"? (Like, do the devices even turn on?) The customer reviews are actually solid, ranging from 4.1 to 4.5 stars out of 5 in the products listed above.
For a deeper take, we reached out to tech expert Jason Howell, founder of Yellowgold Studios, which produces popular technology podcasts. With 10,000 followers on YouTube and 34,000 on X, plenty of shoppers trust Howell to help them make informed device purchases.
“Onn gadgets are built more for value than they are cutting-edge specs, which makes them an incredibly appealing option for buyers who want capable tech without spending beyond their budget," Howell told us. “Performance-focused consumers might find aspects of Onn hardware to be lacking at times, but for most consumers, they deliver about 80 percent of what higher-end devices can do."
According to Howell, Onn fills an important niche by providing capable tech devices at an accessible, affordable price point. If you’re searching for a basic device for a spare room — or just need something to distract your kids without spending a ton of moolah — Onn could be the perfect solution. Just be sure to appropriately temper your expectations.
“Build quality might feel a bit cheaper, materials might be less premium, but functionally, they get the job done," explains Howell.
As long as you’re realistic about what Onn’s tech can and can’t do, especially compared with premium brands, you may be pleasantly surprised — and very glad you didn’t overspend.
