Walmart Thanksgiving 2025 Hours: Closed Nationwide Until Black Friday

It’s a cherished Thanksgiving tradition: you finish roasting the carrots, mashing the potatoes, and thickening the gravy, only to realize you’ve forgotten the green beans or cranberry sauce or poor Aunt Evelyn, still at the airport passenger pickup zone.

For last-minute holiday shopping, though, you can forget about Walmart. For half a decade now, the superstore has closed all its locations nationwide on Thanksgiving to give employees the day off. (It was originally a way to thank employees for their hard work during the pandemic, so over 1 million associates could heartwarmingly stay home to Lysol their mail and then use it in lieu of hoarded toilet paper.)

It appears 2025 will be no different, with multiple sources reporting that Walmart will shut its doors from EOD Wednesday, Nov. 26, until approximately 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. on Black Friday.

If Walmart is your primary spot for groceries — or, perhaps more importantly, prescriptions — be sure to make your list and check it twice. (Speaking of holiday lists, Walmart is also expected to shut down on Christmas Day in 2025. Let’s hope you haven’t left poor Aunt Evelyn waiting at Terminal Z this whole time.)

Sam’s Club, Trader Joe’s, ALDI, Costco, and Target are also closed on Thanksgiving Day. Other major stores are open with adjusted hours — be sure to check with your nearest location for exact hours:

• Albertsons: Typically open to 3 p.m.
• Amazon Fresh: Typically open to 5 p.m.
• Food Lion: Typically open to 4 p.m.
• Harris Teeter: Typically open to 2 p.m.
• H-E-B: “Open 6 a.m. to 12 p.m." (Curbside pickup ends at 11 a.m., home delivery ends at 10 a.m.)
• Kroger: “Your local Kroger grocery store and pharmacy will have limited or adjusted hours"
• Piggly Wiggly: Typically open to 3 p.m.
• Ralphs: “Your local Ralphs grocery store and pharmacy will have limited or adjusted hours"
• Safeway: Typically open to 6 p.m.
• Sprouts: Open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Wegmans: Open to 4 p.m.
• Whole Foods: “Most stores are open on Thanksgiving. Check your local store page for more details."
