Best Things to Buy in February 2021— and 4 Things to Skip

Written by Deanna Nguyen | February 1, 2021

As we settle into 2021, February lets us know that winter is ending and spring is coming. February is a busy month full of holidays and events like Valentine’s Day, Lunar New Year, President’s Day, and the Super Bowl. Know what that means? Retailers will be offering huge February sales! Don’t add everything in your cart, though—here are the best things to buy and skip this month.

The Best Things to Buy in February

Mattresses

President’s Day is the start of major mattress sales throughout the year, so if you haven’t been getting restful sleep, now’s the time to switch out your mattress. Macy’s, Sam’s Club, and JCPenney are notable retailers to keep an eye on when it comes to the holiday sale. Memory foam has been the go-to, but innerspring is still on the market if that’s what you prefer. If you snagged new bedsheets during the January white sales, then you just need a new mattress to complete your bed setup!

TVs

The Super Bowl is just right around the corner once February enters the picture, which means TV sales are bound to happen. January was the first opportunity of the year to snag discounts on TVs from brands like Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic. Fortunately, you have another chance to find deals if you missed out last month.

Furniture and Major Appliances

Along with furniture sales that roll over from January, major appliances typically go on sale on President’s Day. As you shop for mattresses, be on the lookout for deep discounts on refrigerators, washers and dryers, ovens, and more. A house makeover is a perfect way to start anew as 2021 passes us by. Expect up to 70% off on furniture, mattresses, and major appliances on President’s Day from retailers like Best Buy, Home Depot, and Lowe’s.

Cosmetics, Fragrance, and Chocolate

If you’re planning to buy cosmetics or fragrance products, browse the beauty aisles of Kohl's, Walmart, and Target for a mixed collection of affordable and high-end brands to shop from—and pick up some chocolate on your way out. These items generally go on sale post-Valentine’s Day, so it’s a great time to stock up on all-around favorites. The romantic holiday doesn’t always mean you have to spend money on gifts for someone else—you can and should treat yourself, especially if it’s the day or the week after!

4 Things to Skip in February

1. Spring Clothing

As much as you want to start prepping your wardrobe for spring, you might want to hold out a little longer. Once retailers drop their spring collection, prices will be high and discounts will be minimal. It’s best if you shop for spring apparel once Easter sales come around. Generally, it’s better to wait for one to two months after the season to start shopping for clothes. Retailers will move on to the next season, so clearing the inventory is a top priority.

2. Valentine’s Day Gifts and Flowers

Once it’s February, you have two weeks to prepare a gift for your partner on Valentine’s Day. During these two weeks, you want to avoid buying related gifts and flowers. This may sound counter-intuitive, but you should either order ahead of time or get more creative with surprising your sweetheart this month. Trust us—it’ll be good for your wallet!

3. Gym Memberships and Fitness Equipment

January was the prime month to sign up for a gym membership and buy fitness equipment. New Year’s resolutions are already underway, so gyms and retailers tend to revert to the original price after welcoming in new members or racking up sales in fitness equipment. That’s not to say you can’t be late to start a new health routine!

4. Jewelry

We know what you’re thinking: jewelry is the perfect gift to give to your partner on Valentine’s Day, so there should be a ton of sales, right? Although retailers do offer some discounts on jewelry in February, they don’t compare to ones you’ll find later on in the year. As dazzling as the ads may appear, don’t be fooled into buying necklaces or rings without doing research. Find out what other promotions jewelry retailers offer throughout the year and compare the discounts to get your money’s worth.
