Special Olympics was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a passionate advocate for individuals with intellectual disabilities. She believed in the power of sports to change lives and create opportunities for those often left on the sidelines. Eunice organized the first Special Olympics Games in Chicago in 1968, bringing together athletes from different countries. Now, the worldwide Special Olympics movement provides inclusive sports programs in more than 200 countries and jurisdictions, serving more than 3.7 million athletes. In Washington, Special Olympics serves thousands of athletes across the state, providing year-round sports training, free health programs and athlete leadership training.Did you know?

83% of all donations to Special Olympics Washington in January 2024 will be applied directly to providing sporting and training equipment, education, and competitive events for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
